The quality of digital cameras is improving very rapidly now. IF you are looking at buying a digital camera then go for as many 'Megapixels' as you can afford. The bottom line is - the more megapixels, the higher quality the end image is likely to be.
Some things to look for in your first Digital camera:
* Always get one with a normal type viewfinder, as WELL as an LCD screen. These screens are generally impossible to see in bright light, and make taking a photo very difficult.
* Good battery life is critical. What kind of batteries does the camera use? How many pics can you take on a full charge? Pretty screens to look at pics on chew up batteries very quickly.
* What kind of memory does the camera use? Some types of memory cards are cheaper than others. SD memory is dropping in price very quickly now. It's always good to have more than one card ;o
4.0 Megapixel cameras are now becoming the entry level for Digital photography (Jan '05). Anything less is going to be superceeded very quickly.
The other thing that is changing rapidly is the quality of prints you can get from a cheap 'home' inkjet printer. With new inks and high quality paper the results you can get at home are now quite amazing.
The cost of having images printed professional is also dropping rapidly, as film cameras become less popular. It's now very easy to take you camera to a store, choose the prints you want and have them printed on the spot. Again, the more megapixels, the better quality the image you will get from a professional photo store.
Weigh up how you want to look at your pictures most often. Will it be on your computer (medium pixels), your TV (low pixels), or will you want to print all your images? The more megapixels, generally, the better the print.
