Lowe's is by far the better money saver for both the contractor and the do-it-yourselfer. Their organization, selection, and customer service have been better, in my opinion, than their competition.
The layout of their store is generally logical and easy to navigate. Isles are clearly labeled and merchandise is normally where it belongs, not out in the middle of the floor or in a completely unrelated department. Merchandise is arranged like a department store, neat and orderly. I would describe walking into a Home Depot like entering a garage sale in a warehouse. Nothing is put up, the hand lettered signs are hard to read, and the whole floor is in a general state of disorder. Your time is wasted as soon as you enter the building.
I want to be able to get in, get what I need and leave, not spend an hour wandering around in a circus funhouse. In Lowes, product comparison is easy. They have a variety of brands neatly displayed side-by-side with the prices listed clearly. Their displays have coordinates to tell you where to find the product on the shelf if you want to buy it. If the product has a brochure, it is either next to the product or at the main desk in the department.
The staff is generally pleasant and informed about most of their products. If you have questions, they can either tell you the answer, look it up, or ask someone higher in their food chain. Because Lowes emphasizes organization and cleanliness, employees have a harder time getting away with incompetence or rudeness. Managers are easy to find and eager to please. In the worst case scenario, I will tell you for a fact that their customer service hotline, 1-800-44-LOWES, will generate results.
These three things, as well as the frequent sales and great clearance prices, make Lowes the better bargain both in time and money. You might find somethings cheaper at Home Depot, but you will not find them easily, clean, or in a timely manner.
