An informative guide to Google PageRank

and importance.

One way to determine the relative importance of a webpage is by simply counting the number of other web pages linking it, and also noting the importance of those pages featuring a link to that page. You can see the Google Page Rank of any website, by downloading the free Google toolbar. Once you have installed the Google toolbar, it will place a toolbar within your particular web browser.

Be Impressive.

The number of page impressions is also an important measure of the traffic to a website. When somebody goes to a website and loads a page in their web browser, Google counts that as one page impression. That means someone has visited one page of the site. If that same person browses around and looks at 10 pages of that site, Google counts that as 10 page impressions. So basically a page impression is just how many of web pages have been looked at.

The best way to get traffic, and therefore page impressions, to a web site is to have the site rank well in the search engines for the keywords the site's web pages are targeting. Keywords are the common, or the most likely to be used terms entered into the Google Search Box. Keyword optimization includes careful research, selection and placement on a webpage the mostly likely combinations of search terms and phrases.

Optimize, You Say?

This is an important component in Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, as keywords and phrases are ranked by the frequency they are searched for. The proper selection of keywords includes, among other factors, which keywords are likely to bring the most traffic while not being too difficult to rank. More important than keyword optimization, are on- and off- page optimization.

On-page optimization and off-page optimization are refining techniques employed by Webmasters secure the highest page rank possible. On-page optimization refers to proper formatting on the web page. Off-page optimization refers to the techniques for building link popularity beyond the web page itself. Off-page optimization techniques include counting the number and value of inbound and reciprocal links. The most important of which is having the greatest number of in-bound, one-way links possible

While both techniques are important, for Yahoo and MSN, on-page optimization is more important than it is for Google. Google relies more heavily on links than the other big two, though Yahoo and MSN also give significant consideration to the number of links.

Link to Me

Getting a huge number of links to your website is absolutely critical to ranking well in the search engines. Webmasters get links by sending link request emails to content relevant sites, filling out "add a link" forms, building a content relevant reciprocal link directory, by writing articles that include a link to their web site, Blogging, and lately by joining new interactive and populist web sites like My Space, YouTube and FaceBook.
