The Ultimate Warrior, Andre the Giant, Jimmy Superfly Snuka, Ricky the Dragon Steamboat, Tully Blanchard, Cactus Jack, Ric Flair and on up into the immortal Hulk Hogans illustrious career. All of these names plus or minus a few others probably don't mean much to the average person who's blood pumps with something other than pigskin on a Monday night. No, to the professional wrestling fan; these are more than just the names of some guys that laced up boots and stepped into the squared circle to do battle in front of sold out arena crowds. These names and the men that wore them were legends... they were and in some way still are superstars.

I grew up in the height of the Hulkster's improbable wars with Andre the Giant. I remember Rowdy Roddy Piper and Pipers Pit. I can remember watching the Ultimate Warrior thunder into the ring under a rage that his huge muscular body threatened to lose control of at any second rendering him a force of nature, an uncontrollable storm of destruction. These were times when it was unthinkable to miss a Sunday morning broadcast lest i miss some vital piece the blood wars between Ric Flair and Sting over on TBS during a Nitro broadcast. It would be impossible to look back on those days and not recognize the true superstars of the ring.

The WWE and the WCW (while it was in business) tried to bring back the super collectives that made history in the world of wrestling like DX, the NWO and more recently Evolution yet none of them could ever in a million years compare the the original 4 Horsemen. Which brings me to my ultimate point. With the exception of a few names still active on the WWE roster... i see no superstars! Is John Cena a superstar? Not even close! He is an awesome athlete this is true and i won't argue that point at all. However, like all martial arts movie stars are compared to the late, great Bruce Lee; nobody will be comparing WWE superstars to John Cena in the near or far flung future. I'm not however prepared to call him a dud just yet either.

Pop quiz! What was Stone Cold Steve Austins wrestling name before he became Stone Cold? If you answered Stunning Steve Austin... you just proved my point. The superstars are the one's we remember. We remember the Hulk Hogans, the Iron Sheiks and the Road Warrior Hawks and Animals. We found ourselves wondering what happened to the tag team of Demolition after the mid-nineties because they were superstars and they mattered to us. We suffered through a bloody match with the old
