The question of whether or not a bipolar mother would make a good parent angers me. Why are mothers who are diabetics, epileptics or who have any other illness not asked this same question? I can tell you why! The lack of education and the stigma that comes with a mental health diagnosis.
I will be the first to admit that individuals with bipolar disorder need to be stable for an extended period of time before deciding to take on motherhood. This goes with any illness though. Will children of a diabetic mother who has poor blood sugar control, or an epileptic mother off medication having seizures, not effect a child emotionally? Bipolar disorder, like any other disorder, can be controlled with medication, following a strict routine, and the ability to recognize not only the triggers, but also the symptoms of a relapse.
Bipolar individuals, through treatment, acquire numerous, effective coping skills that the average person in our society lack. When it comes to parenting, the bipolar individual is far more prepared to handle the stresses of motherhood in an effective matter. Children sense the stress, fear, anger and various other emotions of their parents. Mothers who do not handle these emotions properly can unknowingly have a catastrophic effect on their children. So who do you think will handle unpleasant emotions more effectively? The "normal" mother, or the informed bipolar.
Mainstream media is at fault for the main influence on modern society. I am furious that unfair, discriminative stereotypes are still portrayed in this day and age. It is time for the mentally ill population to take a stand and end the stigma. The fortunate individuals who do not have a mental health diagnosis need to educate themselves before making harsh judgments.
