Behind the name: Scott

Beam me up Scotty, was my favorite expression from Star Trek. And, I suppose the name Scott has kept its warrior connotation. Now, aside from Star Trek and our engineer Scotty what else do we know about the name Scott?

We know that Scotland was settled by tribes calling themselves the Scepts. If we can presume that the tribe pronounced the letter c as k as in some Greek dialects, then, the pronunciation would be skepts. Let us keep to this line of reasoning and add a mac or son of a skept and we have McSkept, a son of a skept. Since the area was settled by skepts the obvious reference to skeptland or skotland isn't difficult to presume. Of course, where the e became o might take some time to digest a Christianizing of Skeptland.

Scotland was a bona-fide Catholic land up until their Queen Marie the Catholic Queen raised her heel against her cousin Elizabeth and lost her pretty head. And, since we say cousin then it is obvious that the Royal House of England is Scottish by heredity and King Egbert. With their bonny Queen beheaded it didn't take the practical Scottish long to fall in line behind the normal Stewarts and to drop the prancing French along with their headless Queen Marie of the House of Stuart.

The isle of England is not about to let some old invaders continue to interfere with their country and they wield a mighty hand. I don't read anywhere in history where the French ran to avenge their Scottish lassie with the French airs.

The name Scott simply means the son of a Skept or Christian Skot.

What is becoming amusing is the neo Skots attempting to resurrect their Catholic Marie and Scott as her lackey. It didn't happen in history and history usually does repeat itself.

Beam me up Scotty.
