Snowboarding

What size and width should your snowboard be?

In snowboarding there are many variables that can change your experience and performance dramatically. One of the easiest to control is the size and width of your board. Imagine if Tony Stewart tried to win the Daytona 500 riding on mud tires, it just does not make sense. The same applies to your snowboard; you need the right board for you. The right board for you will depend on your waist and style that you will ride. With the ever-changing sport of snowboarding many new boards are developed on a regular basis, finding the right board is a vital part to successful riding.

One of the main things to focus on while picking a board will be your waist size. When you ride a snowboard you will be standing sideways. Standing in this position your toes should line up or be just slightly over the edge of the board. Ideally if you have a proper alignment with your feet and board you will achieve the optimum performance out of your board. This is best due to the amount of strength due to leverage you will generate for turns. If your boots hang over the board your toes or heels can contact the snow causing bone breaking crashes or embarrassing falls. If you have the opposite it will decrease your turn rate, causing you to have a feel of less balance and control.

Depending on the style that you will ride, will determine other variables that can change your snowboard decision. You wouldn't wear hiking shoes to run a marathon, and you wouldn't use a racing board for a freestyle snowboarding competition. Just like shoes boards are created for the different ways they may be used. Racing boards are created narrow and sleek to reduce drag and increase speed. With these types of boards your maneuverability isn't the same as others. Freestyle boards offer more balance and control, and the tips are as identical as possible. In freestyle snowboarding you won't always have your dominant foot forward, by creating the "twin-tip" your board will not hinder you from boarding week foot forward into or out of tricks.

A snowboard is a weapon of choice for many of today's athletes. Some can cut through the snow like a knife through butter, while others generate speeds to propel you down the mountain as fast as you can. Either way every board is created different for each consumer. To be a great boarder you should determine which is best for you. Determine the size of your waist and use that when determining the width of your board. You also need to decide the style in which you will use your board. Not deciding which board is best for you is only setting you up for failure and could make you feel like you wasted a trip to the slopes. Save your time, money, and pride by getting the board that is right for you!
