The best tip of all is to learn HTML(Hyper Text Mark Up Language) first. HTML is not difficult to learn and designing web pages with Microsoft Word will be so much easier if you are able to understand what is happening. However, once you have learned HTML you probably won't bother with using Word anyway because it is much easier to just type in the code using Notepad and the results will be very much better than you could ever achieve using Word.
I first started looking for an easy way to create web sites about eighteen months ago and started out using Word because I didn't know HTML and knew that Word could be used to do this. The reality of using Word was a very frustrating experience. I just could not get the layouts or effects I wanted. This is because Word is a WYSIWYG(What You See Is What You Get) program. This severely limits creativity in designing web pages.
I almost gave up and let somebody else design my web sites but then I found this marvelous book, the title is, "Step by Step HTML and XHTML", author Faithe Wempen, publisher Microsoft Press, ISBN, 0-7365-2263-9. Unlike any other computer reference book I have ever bought this one is beautifully written, clear, concise and very easy to understand. I bought the book because it has a chapter on how to use Microsoft Word to produce web pages but I quickly became interested in following all the lessons in the book and mastering HTML. Within just two days I knew enough to start writing my own code and within a week I had written and published my first website, http://www.holidaycottagedorse t.co.uk.
Now I use Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition for the creation of my web sites. This software package is free from Microsoft and supported by many hours of training videos available as free downloads. Once you have experienced this you will wonder why you ever considered messing around with Word in the first place. So, take my tip, forget about using Word, learn a little HTML, take a look at the new software from Microsoft and start having some real fun producing creative and dynamic web sites.
