I think cruises are a brilliant way to enjoy retirement. The joy of the cruise is that you don't even need to disembark from the ship if you don't want to. You will have days at sea to relax in but most days the ship will visit a different port. It will be up to you to decide if you want to visit the port in question. Cruises nowadays are not just for elderly people enjoying retirement. They are now enjoyed by all ages. They are particularly favored by travelers because they can give a glimpse of each travel destination without staying too long in it. This opens up possibilities for future travel or staying longer in the future at a place you have particularly enjoyed.
Accommodation on a cruise ship is generally very comfortable and if you pay a bit more you should be lucky enough to have a cabin with a sea view. Sleeping in the cabin is generally quite relaxing. I have had 2 cruises up to now. The first which was in the Mediterranean was a perfect smooth journey but the second cruise which was around New Zealand was quite stormy and bumpy. I don't think you can compare the accommodation on ship to a five star hotel room, mainly because of the limitation of space, but it is still more than adequate.
Entertainment on cruises is coming into its own. It is not unusual to have performers on board who are semi-famous. The range of entertainment is quite amazing. People on cruises have so much to do. If your destination is hot, you can sunbathe on the deck. Also the pool is always there to be enjoyed. You can meet many friends as you wonder around the ship. The shopping facilities are good and you will be able to buy duty-free gifts, even stock up for birthdays and Christmas. AS for the food, well dare I mention it. The range of food on a cruise ship is simply brilliant and the amount inexhaustible. In fact, you will probably leave the cruise ship a god few pounds heavier than when you embarked. But take heed, there are daily activity programs. Every night you will be given a newsletter by your cabin help which gives a huge list of the events for the next day that you can take part in. You can even go to an Art auction on board.
So I think, if you want to enjoy your retirement, cruises are wonderful. A word of advice though, don't overdo it. There is simply so much to do and see and so many trips available at each port that you might find that after a cruise you may feel in desperate need for a real break doing nothing at all!
