My first pregnancy, I remember it just like it was yesterday. We had gotten married in September, and I found out in February that I was three weeks pregnant. You want to talk a long wait from finding out. Boy was I excited. I was crying in the midst of shouting to all the relatives and friends on the phone that I was going to have a baby!
Everyone was so excited for us. We decided we had to move into a bigger place. I needed to decorate a room just for my baby. I had already picked out baby names and I was ready. I wanted to be a mom well it seems like forever.
My first appointment went really well. It was more the history of both sides and just to get the goodie bag as I refer to it. It came with samples of tums, and info guides in it and some other little goodies like coupons and great pregnancy tips.
The visits after that began what was about to become a very long and tiring pregnancy. No matter how long and tiring it was going to be, I knew the end result was worth every second. Well my due date was set for October 22nd. Sounds good to me. I was secretly hoping she would arrive on the 17th my birthday. As everyone told me first babies they never come early and that would always be followed up with a laugh.
Well as each baby visit came different things needed to be done. There is all kinds of testing to make sure your baby is growing properly, that they have all the nurtients they are supposed to be getting and also to make sure you do not have diabetes which can cause for you to have premature labor. Not only does it cause premature labor but, most babies of gestational diabetics are rather large which sometimes is unhealthy cause their lungs have not fully developed. Well I failed the one hour test and had to do the three hour test. Needless to say, I failed the three hour glucose test as well. I was officially labeled a high risk pregnancy as well as gestational diabetic. I was monitoring from home and bringing a list of my blood sugars to each visit. The baby was on track, and the ultrasounds showed just how well she was growing.
Towards the end of the pregnancy I did go into premature labor twice which they stopped with a drug called tribudilin. Tribudilin causes you to shake so don't be alarmed if you have to take it, it does subside in a matter of minutes. If it works your contractions will also subside. Well here I thought with premature labor starting once at seven and a half months I was certainly going to deliver early. No such luck. My baby was born one week to the day late. I was induced and went through labor for 37 hours then finally was taken to the OR where I delivered by C-section. She is a beautiful baby girl. She weighed in at 8 pounds 11 ounces 21 inches long she was my little bundle of joy and she is my big bundle of joy now. She spent two weeks in the NICU. That is the neonatal intensive care unit. Every nurse and the team of doctors in the NICU are highly specialized for newborns or infants who have a serious to life threatening illness. She was not there due to complications of the diabetes, she was there cause when they broke my water and had me labor for so long she ended up catching strepnococcal pneumonia from swallowing the water. She did fine and finally came home the second week of November. I have since had three more children all by c-section and all of them are wonderful bundles of joy.
