How Search Engines Work:
How does search engines work? Most search engines "spider" the Web looking for new pages to add to their database or index. Once your pages are added to the index, people can do a search on the Internet for various keywords to find pages that "best" match their search criteria. These matches will be ranked or positioned in order of importance. Appearing within the first few pages of the search is critical to people finding you. You can wait for one of these spiders to locate your site but you could be in for a long wait. The better approach is to go to their site (or a site submission service) and tell them about your new Web site.
Keyword Selection:
Choosing the right keywords for your site is essential to your success in ranking high on search engines. Therefore, think about what keywords people are likely to use to find you. It is suggested that you make lists of keywords and then combine them into two or three word phrases.
For example, you wouldn't want to use the keyword "money"since billions of this word would be indexed on the web. The word "money" alone does nothing to target your audience. You should pair it with one or two other words. You could have "make money on-line" , "money makers" or "earn on-line money". Statistically, most people search for two to three word phrases to avoid getting too many unrelated search results. Keep this in mind when you design your pages.
It is also important to keep in mind that there are some keywords that are very competitive so just be creative. There are so many keyword combinations where you can use to achieve a high/higher ranking. Once you have tap into some phrases people are searching on to find your type of website, you'll have tapped into a continuous stream of free advertising for your web site. It's all about thinking like your customer.
