You may wish to glue extra felt to the inside of the cozy to reinforce the holes and prevent tearing.

-Knit or crochet versions-
To knit or crochet a felted cell phone cozy, it is important to choose the right yarn. In order to felt, the yarn must be made of wool. Be sure that the wool is not superwash wool, which will not felt. You should also be careful about selecting very light colors; the bleaching process used on these wools may change how well they felt.

The work should be done at a loose gauge, so that the wool fibers have some space to tangle and shrink. The simplest way is to knit or crochet a rectangle and seam it as described above, but the cell phone cozy can also be worked in the round. It can be worked top-down, from the opening to the bottom seam, or worked from the bottom up, as one would make a toe-up sock. In any case, the original dimensions of the work before felting should be much larger than the cell phone, so that it can shrink to the right size. (Ordinarily I would recommend swatching and doing a test wash, to be sure what size to knit, but in this case the swatch would be... an unseamed cell phone cozy.)

When the cozy is ready to be felted, simply send it for a spin in the washing machine, in hot water and with a pair of jeans (to add agitation). Check on the cozy every 5 minutes to see how much it has shrunk. When it is the right size, pull it out of the washer, shape it, and let it air dry.

A simple way to spice up your knitted or crocheted cozy is to use eyelash yarn held together with the wool for the cast on and the first few rows. This adds a small decorative edge, since the eyelash yarn will not felt. You can also decorate your cozy with whatever craft supplies are available. When you're finished, you'll have a one-of-a-kind cell phone cozy, to keep your phone safe and to make a bold statement.
