How to make a cell phone cozy

A cell phone cozy is as useful as it is simple to make. In its most basic form, a cell phone cozy is just a rectangle, folded in half. But this is a project that can be spiced up by making the design a little more complicated or adding your own embellishments. You can also easily knit or crochet a cell phone cozy. A little creative thinking will bring you lots of possibilities, but let's explore some of the basics.

-The basic design-
This cozy is so easy, a three-year-old could make it, but it lends itself well to decoration. The first step is to measure your cell phone. Find its length from top to bottom and width from side to side. Add about an inch to each of these dimensions.

Now you will need some felt. You can buy squares of felt in many colors at most craft stores. From your felt, cut out a long tall rectangle; the rectangle should be twice as tall as your cell phone, plus one inch, and as wide as your cell phone is, plus one inch. (If your cell phone, like mine, is from the Stone Age and an inch or more thick, you will want to add some more space to the width of your rectangle to allow for the extra depth.)

Fold the rectangle in half, thin edge to thin edge. You may sew the two side edges together, but glue will work just as well. Be sure to leave the top edge unglued! You may also sew or glue together the folded edge of the pouch to give it more strength.

Flip your cozy inside out. You're done! Now your cozy is ready to be decorated with fabric paint, googly eyes, rick rack, buttons, beads, or anything else that appeals to you.

-Simple modifications-
The basic cell phone cozy is a simple pouch, but you can easily add some design features to make it stand out.

You may find that you want to add a flap to the top of your cozy to keep your phone from sliding out. This is quite easy to add. Simply make the rectangle you cut longer by the length of the flap you want to add. When you fold the rectangle over, leave one folded side longer than the other by the edge of the flap. This will give you a rectangle flap; you could also cut the flap after folding to be triangular, round, or any shape that pleases you. You can secure your flap with a snap, button, or another closure- look around your craft store and see what catches your eye.

If you don't want to slip your cell phone into a purse or a pocket, consider adding a belt loop to your cell phone cozy. One way of doing this is to cut two vertical slits in the back of the cozy wide enough for a belt to pass through.
