Though soccer is the msot popular sport in the world, and I would be interested in the growth of its popularity in the U.S., it will be many years until such a thing happens. For Americans, the NFL, NBA, and MLB are the major organization for sports. It wasn't until a little more than a decade ago that MLS came. With David Beckham in MLS now, I believe that is 1 step closer for soccer to gain it's popularity. In my opinion, the cure for getting more viewers to watch MLS is to get big names into the game. Though Ronaldo and Ronaldihnio would be nice, I think some people who are English would show a greater impact for some reason.
I mean, if you go to Europe, they won't be doing the NFL, America's sport. The CFL in Canada, the only way people will watch that is if big names from the NFL go there, such as Ricky Williams did.
The roots of this problem are the television companies. The only times I ever get to watch international soccer is when I go to foreign countries or the World Cup which is once every 4 yrs. If I can't wait, I can pay for extra special channels, but not many do that. While the broadcasting of MLS is very slim, the big leagues such as Real Madrid, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Barcelona aren't even shown unless you get pay-per-view. Get some of those clubs, not on ESPN, not on ESPN2, but on NBC. More than 95% of American Households have access to NBC. You could estimate at least 30% of those would be watching a once in a life time offer to watch some publicly broadcasted international soccer. And that's my solution.
