The Man of Crows Knows!

Warren hated Saturday's, even more then Monday. He'd much rather go to school and deal with Arnold Tolben dunking his head in the toilet then to shuck corn for twelve hours with his dad. His dad was a harsh, rugged man with years of stories in the weathered hands he used to seed the fields with corn. His dad valued a hard work ethic and if you didn't hold the same value as he did you best be pretend you did.

Chicken is what his dad called him when he would hear the cit chat around town about Warren having his head dunked by Arnold. "You need to stand up to that boy and be a man" he would say while shaking his head in disappointment. And when he tried to argue the fact that the boy Arnold was twice his size with nearly a hundred more pounds on him, he'd then go on with stories of when he was a boy and how he would never have had his head dunked in a toilet.

Warren was not excited about working with his dad today, not only because he hated shucking corn but because Arnold made Friday's trash day and thought it would be fun to see how well he fit in the dumpster. Instead of facing the humiliation of having spaghetti stringing from his hair and jeans, he decided to spend the day in the dumpster and take the punishment for playing hooky.

He could smell bacon cooking as he entered the hallway that led to the kitchen and his mouth watered fiercely causing his stomach to talk and mumble loudly. Despite the smell of the food and the fact that he was famished, he debated weather he should skip breakfast and just get started working so he could avoid the conversation with his dad that he had been anticipating even in his sleep.

Warren could see his dad setting the table and the clock above the stove chimed five thirty with a coo coo bird springing out the opening of the old antique bird house his mother once loved so much. His dad cleared his throat with a small cough and then spoke sternly, Come in Warren and eat your breakfast! We have lots of work to do today and it would be best if we get a head start on it.

Yes sir, Warren said quickly slipping into his chair and shoved bacon into his mouth hoping to avoid any conversations that may arise. Maybe he had not been missed during class; he thought amongst the crunching noise the bacon made as he chomped. Nobody had really noticed him any how, except when his head had been wet.

You know Warren, stated his dad. Life is not all
