How to get started with cycling

The joy of first riding a bike is hard to beat. For many it is just another happy childhood memory. Its never too late to get that same enjoyment back with bringing cycling back into your life right now. There will be some costs involved but the benefits far outweigh them.

There are a few key pieces of equipment that will determine how successful you are in bringing cycling into your life. The best advice I can give when choosing cycling equipment, comfort and fit trump all else. Don't just buy something cause its flashy or cheap, be sure to purchase items that will make your cycling experience comfortable and safe.

First and foremost is a good safe bicycle that is suited to what you will be using it for. Some bikes can be very versatile, such as a mountain bike, or MTB for short, which can take you just about anywhere you want to go. Or if you will be sticking to the pavement you will want to look at a dedicated road bike. One other type to consider would be a hybrid bicycle, which is suited to roads or bike paths that are either paved or gravel. A hybrid will do many of the same things a MTB will except for serious off road MTB trails.

Once you decide on the type of bicycle and it comes time to purchasing there are a few more things to keep in mind. If you value your safety do not buy a department store bicycle, they are cheaply made, poorly assembled and if they hold together have a very limited life span. Sizes are very limited and the service is generally very poor. Go to a Bicycle store they will be able to professionally help you choose the right bike for you. Remember comfort and fit are the most important, if the bicycle does not fit you properly it can be unsafe.

The next item that you will need is a helmet that fits well. Try ones on from different manufacturers, your size may be the same in each, but each company's helmets will fit slightly different. Fits like a glove should come to mind when choosing a helmet. It should be snug and sit comfortably on your head. Good helmets start around $50.00.

One more important item that you will wish you had once you start cycling a lot, is a pair of padded cycling shorts. If tight spandex is not your style clothing companies also make baggy free ride type shorts with padding built in so they look like a normal pair of shorts. But they can tend to chaff and bunch, so for the ultimate in comfort you will need to get yourself in a pair of padded spandex shorts.

Those three items are the most basic things you will need to enjoy cycling. But the sky is the limit when it comes to accessories, bike parts, and clothing. Cycling is its own industry and it quickly becomes a lifestyle.

Once you have all the right equipment, its time to get out and ride. Take it slow at first, pay attention to traffic and terrain you are riding on. If you are riding off-road stay on easier trails, until your confidence and skills grow. While road-riding stick to the back roads with less traffic. Remember that while you are riding a bicycle you have the same rights and responsibilities as a motorist. You must obey all highway laws, including stopping at stop signs and riding on the right side of the road.

Most importantly have fun, and enjoy the outdoors.
