The Notre Dame football team had a miserable year last year. 3-9 does not make for happy fans. After their first 8 games they were 1-7 and ranked last in the nation in offense. I thought coach Weis was an offensive coordinator in the pros?
Coach Weis probably missed Brady Quinn as much as the fans. The running game was also miserable but I don't think Coach Weis should be fired, at least not yet.
Talent is college football is spread more thinly than ever. 2007 in college football had no truly dominant teams and there were many new programs in the top 10 like Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, University of South Florida.
Notre Dame is not exempt from having to rebuild and the results of recruiting high school players is something that may require some luck along with experience and having a program with some history. Really good players may leave school early to play professionally and injuries may have an adverse impact on a college program which may or may not be the coaches responsibility.
Notre Dame seems to get quality athletes year after year, Coach Weis's success as a recruiter is still to be determined. The program would not be helped in having a third head coach in 4 years. Coach Weis was hired because he had a good football mind, he may just need some more time to get his system fully in place. A head coach with professional experience at the highest level is invaluable when recruiting blue chip players with dreams of professional careers.
However, if Notre Dame continues its slide towards the bottom in college football I believe the whole program will need to be looked at. Notre Dame has some academic requirements for attending the school that other football factory schools don't seem to have. I personally like the fact that almost all of the Irish graduate and are good citizens after college but that may not go over well with a fan base that has been able to develop both a unique television contract and special treatment from the people at the BCS. Winning may require some adjustments that go beyond just looking for a coach. I hope Notre Dame's football fortunes improve and coach Weis is able to keep his job.
