"Where do we stop?"
Peanut products themselves are not the problem, and school districts should not be held responsible for making these types of restrictions. It's perfectly reasonable to have a single class or even school create restrictions on food products to accommodate the needs of at-risk students, but drawing the line at the school district level doesn't make any sense.
Parents of kids who are in danger often feel that the school is a dangerous place because of food being consumed by other students. The reality is that in most cases, these problems can be solved by banning peanut products in a single classroom or school. Even if a school district was to ban peanuts, the playgrounds, zoos, stores, would all still have peanuts. The end result would just be a matter of delaying the reaction.
Any of us with minor allergies could react to virtually anything at any time. Imagine if we were to accommodate every person at risk and ban every allergen in every place in the country. That would leave us with little more than salt and water to consume.
The researchers say that we are over-cleaning our homes and that the sterile environment increases the risk of infants developing allergies. Surely, the smog over our cities, the chemicals in our homes, and the pesticides on our foods are the true culprit... not whether the local school board has banned peanuts.
