Every new mother receives a nursery full of gifts. Of course, they all have one thing in common; they are all about the baby. Instead, you want to get something unique, something personal. You want to speak directly to her heart, without having to compete with her new bundle of joy. So, where do you start?

First, you have to know what to avoid. Although your friend appreciates the gifts she receives for the baby, get her something that is just for her. Remind her that she is not just a new mom; she is still your friend, a vibrant, young woman that deserves to enjoy things that women love.

Second, don't get her anything that will remind of her new body shape and size. Unless she's a professional athlete or totally devoted to her workout regimen, she does not need you to tell her that she's still carrying baby-weight. She can deal with that dilemma once her newborn is sleeping through the night.

That narrows things down. It also takes away the more obvious gifts. But you're not looking for obvious; you're looking for the perfect gift. You want to see her smile and watch her heart melt right in front of you.

Consider a different kind of bundle of joy'. How about giving the new mother a gift basket? This gives you several options. If your friend is in need of some relaxation, try aromatherapy candles, herbal teas and soft music, or home spa items in her favorite scent. If you want to give her a romantic evening with her husband, fill her basket with wine and cheese, a couple of candles, a long-stemmed red rose, and maybe a negligee. A side benefit to giving a basket is that once she has enjoyed all the goodies, she'll be able to use the basket for any number of things.

How about giving her a gift certificate? It might sound impersonal, but it doesn't have to be. Think about it, she has been busy with dirty diapers and midnight feedings. She hasn't even considered doing something for herself. However, if her dear friend suggested it, she might. So, get her a gift certificate for a haircut and style. She could try a whole new look or an easier style for rushed mornings. You could present her with a manicure or pedicure. Or you could treat her to a full-body massage. All of these things are going to make her feel beautiful and special. It would make it even more special if you spent that time with her.

If she is not into (or not ready for) treating herself to some pampering, you can still provide a service that she would adore. Hire someone to clean her home. Have her car detailed. On the other hand, you could offer your time and talent by cooking a meal for her family. You could also offer to babysit if she needs a night out or has an event that she needs to attend.

So many things you can do will touch her heart. My personal favorite is giving the new mom the most luxuriously soft bathrobe ever made, like the ones in those expensive hotels. Every time she puts it on, she'll be thankful that you are in her life.
