Difficulty falling asleep can be one of the most annoying problems to deal with over the course of a day. As you lay there, staring at the ceiling, wondering if you will ever fall asleep, you start to think of what you could do to fall into the realm of peaceful slumber. The problem is that, at least for me, it is too late to do most of the things that really work.
The number one way I have found helps me fall asleep is to physically exhaust myself. I may go for a run or do some calisthenics before a nice warm shower. I find that this completely relaxes every part of my body. After I get out of the shower I dry off and climb into a nice warm bed and sleep just seems to set in before I know it. Sleep is about rejuvenation, so if you are already in an energetic and alert state of mind then your body and mind will see no reason for you to spend time to achieve the state you are already in.
Sometimes, after working to tire my body, I attempt to work on my mind as well. I have found that reading a book in bed immediately before attempting to fall asleep just lets my mind drift to a calm and relaxed state. The book can't be too interesting or I find it difficult to put down, but it does have to be able to hold my interest for at least enough time to finish a couple chapters. By this time I am mentally and physically worn out enough to fall asleep very quickly. I am too tired for my mind to wander, thinking of random things that happened during my day, and I am too exhausted to toss and turn restlessly.
These are the main things that I do before I attempt to fall asleep and they seem to work almost every time. I am not sure if it is the exact thing I am doing or if it is simply the fact that I am following a set routine. My mind and body know that after I follow that pattern it is time to rest. I think that patterns are what drive us subconsciously, through repetition we can act without even having to think about it.
I hope that my advice has helped you in your quest for a good nights sleep. Maybe some of my methods work and maybe they don't but I do believe that if you find something that seems to work you should make it part of a routine so that your body understands that the last step in the pattern is for everything to shut down and go to sleep. I truly believe that the routine theory makes sense and I hope it is able to help you put an end to all those restless nights and dreary mornings.
