the fastening:
3. Place cover piece together to check the press fasteners correspond and adjust position of press plasterer tape if necessary. Carefully pull the fastener tape apart. Turn under 3/8in (1cm) at the raw ends of the press fastener tape and, using a zipper foot, machine stitch both long edges, close to the edge of the tape.
Finishing the opening:
4. Press the two sides of the fastening tape together. At either end of the fastening tape, pin and tack cover pieces together just above the hem from the duvet raw edge to 5/8in (1.5cm) pas the end of tape. Then tack at right angles across the hem and tape. Machine stitch along tacking lines stitching twice across the hem and the tape.
Completing the cover:
5. Use French seams. With wrong sides together stitch three remaining edges taking a 3/8in (1cm) seam. Trim seams to 1/4in (5mm). Turn to wrong side and stitch a 3/8in (1cm) seam to enclose raw edges. Turn to right side.
Adding a gathered frill to the basic duvet cover is very straightforward. For a reversible duvet cover it is better to use a strip of lace or make a double frill so that the cover looks neat from both sides.
You can attach a frill to the sides of the cover, to the sides and lower edge, or all the way around the cover if you like.
Cutting out:
1. Cut out and hem the front and back cover pieces as in step 1 for the duvet cover. Measure round the four sides of the duvet and cut frill strips, one and a half times this measurement. Join them into a loop.
Attaching the frill:
2. Run rows of gathering stitches, 1/8in (3mm) from either side of frill seam line. Divide both the edges of cover front and the frill into the same number of equal-sized sections and mark with pins. Matching pins and raw edges, pin frill to the right side of cover front at the sides and top edges. On the opening edge, pin frill 5/8in (1.5cm) in from the hemmed edge. Gather frill to fit and tack.
Completing cover:
3. Prepare and attach the fastening tape as in steps 3 and 4. The front tape piece covers the raw edge of the frill. Finish the opening and join the cover as given in steps 4 and 5, catching the frill in between the two layers. Remove the gathering stitches.
