When you think of Vail, Colorado most of us think of fresh powder and amazing trails, but Vail has much more to offer than just skiing.
Ever wanted to try your hand at dog sledding? Well, at Vail you can take a guided dog sled tour to the historical Camp Hale. You don't actually get to drive the sled, but the ride through the rocky mountain even as a passenger is an experience few people are fortune enough to have. Most tours are half days so bundle up and hang on for the adventure of a life time.
There is nothing like fly fishing in a slow rolling steam with a slight breeze and the sun warming the air right? Wrong, you haven't fly fished until you have fished the tail waters in Vail during the winter. The trout are active and feeding year round and fishermen using nymphs and mysis shrimp flies have been known to take home some pretty amazing catches, or at least stories about the big one that got away.
What could be more romantic than a sleigh ride through the snow covered streets and country side of Vail. Snuggle up under a blanket and sip hot chocolate with the one that you love while a horse drawn sleigh takes you through some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world.
For those of you who love to experience all the beauty and grandeur of the Rocky Mountain, but are too whimpy to bare the cold temperatures, take a snow coach tour. A heated coach will take you on trails that wind through the White River National Forest.
Nothing can compare to the view of Vail and the Rocky Mountains from the air, hot air that is. Imagine experiencing this breathtaking mountain community and country side from the basket of a hot air balloon. The crisp clean mountain air will allow you to see for miles in any direction while you float hundreds of feet above the trees and snow.
Vail isn't just for snow bunnies and adrenaline junkies, there are several theaters and art galleries in the area for those of you with more refined tastes or for skiers who want to sit back, relax and enjoy a little culture after a long day on the mountain.
The next time you are in Vail, take a break from skiing to experience some of the other adventures Vail has to offer.
