Horses have been a part of my life since I was five years old. No other member of my family has ever been involved in the equine world so it was a new thing to them when I just kept saying 'I want to ride horses, I want to learn to ride!' I had seen these magical creatures galloping through fields, tails held high & whinnying to each other. They had their own method of communication & I wanted to be part of their world. Now, 20 years on, horses are still an important part of my life. They are individuals, each & every one, just as we are. They show their love in different ways. Through the years I have learnt about how they demonstrate their affection for their carer. They may whinny when you arrive at the yard. They may nudge you to say hello. Some of my horses have taken the time to groom me when I am brushing them, which is a privelige. It means I am included in their pack, I am part of their herd and an important member of their family. If you stand at a certain angle to your horse (Monty Roberts methods) you can be the leader of their herd and you can send them away with a look alone, without using any equipment. Soften that body language and see them lower their head, twitch their ears and come in to see you. I reward this with a lovely stroke of the face. And I very often get rewarded back with a nuzzle and a nudge. Horses are one of the most affectionate animals and display their love as equally as they display their unhappiness. It's easy to see a happy loved horse grazing peacefully in the field, ears twitching awaiting the arrival of their loved one. It's a pleasure to hear the whinny of joy as your car arrives. It's a joy to be part of these magical beautiful animals lives and as long as we continue to love them they will continue to demonstrate their love and appreciation to us in many varied forms.
