Most books and doctors will tell you that the only sure way to ensure a good, rich milk supply is to eat well and nurse often. I try my best to follow the food pyramid, but as a mother of two, my meals sometimes consist of whatever my toddler didn't finish for lunch or a quick snack between story time at the library and a play date at the park. I have been having trouble keeping up with my ravenous son and recently have done some research and found some great ways to help turn on the faucet, you might say.
As I mentioned before, I'm often on the run. A great snack to throw in your handbag that is rich in vitamins, minerals, and needed calories is a nutritional shake such as Boost or Ensure(I happen to buy the store brand). They don't taste bad at all and come in either two hundred and fifty or three hundred and fifty calories. You can also find some great snack bar recipes and have those handy as well.
I also rely on herbal supplements to help me along the way. Fenugreek is an herb used to increase milk production. It comes in capsules and also in teas. Marshmallow root- not the treat- is known to make the milk richer and more satisfying. It too comes in a capsule or as a tea. Finally, red raspberry leaf is supposed to do wonders for your milk supply, once again in a capsule or as a tea (please note that it is not the regular raspberry tea in the grocery store- check the ingredients, it should just be "red raspberry leaves", not "artificial flavorings").
Breastfeeding, as we all know, is a wonderful experience for mother and baby and should be given every fighting chance to make it through that first year. These tips are my lifeline right now and have been working wonders for me. I hope that you will find them useful and that nursing is a breeze for you! Breast of luck!
