Recycling denim in craft projects

Denim is a great scrap fabric for use in craft projects. Because it is sturdy, lasting, and usually expensive, it seems a shame to throw it away. Most craft denim comes from ripped jeans, where the knee or crotch area has been worn thru, but the rest on the material is in great shape. So it seems like there is always plenty of extra denim in any home.

QUILT

- The first classic denim craft project is a good, old blue jeans quilt. These can be very strong, lasting heirloom items that also work as super warm blankets. Since denim is heavy and thick, creating a quilt can be a long, hard process. But once made, these things look amazing, are very warm, and last forever.

- Many times, because of seams, pockets, and such, using a sewing machine doesn't work. So be prepared to do some hand sewing. Remember that the jeans should only be the top of the blanket. The underside should be a soft backing, since jeans would be scratchy against the skin.

BAG

- Since denim is so strong, the fabric is perfect for making assorted bags. Really cute purses can be crafted, especially when the back pocket of the pants is used in the design. But purses aren't the only type of bag that can be made, denim works great for backpacks, snugglies, or even wallets.

PILLOW

- Cute decorative pillows can also be made from denim, but they won't work well for sleeping. Creating pillows for seating is really a better idea. The fabric can also be used to re-upholster a couch or chair. The denim will have to be cut into strips and sewn together into large sheets. Then the sheets can be cut and sewn into individual cushion covers or new slipcovers!

RUG

- A fantastic way to make a really sturdy rug is to use denim. A basic braided and weaved rug can come out looking great. Just cut the fabric into long strips to twist and sew into an adorable welcome mat. These rugs can be a tough as a straw or a textured mat for wiping off muddy/snowy shoes.

TOYS

- Many assorted styles of dolls, stuffed animals, or plain puppets can be easily crafted. Teddy bears made of old jeans look so cute when done properly. This is another task that will probably take alot of hand sewing, but it'll be worth it.

- Create a rag doll from the fabric, or just some new doll clothes! Big puppets or finger puppets are a breeze to make. For extra fun, try creating the denim shape, then let kids glue buttons, beads, or yarn onto the puppet for a face and clothes.

ANIMAL ITEMS

- Old denim is perfect for creating some neat items for pets. The fabric
