Memoirs: The toys I grew up with

by Naomi E

Created on: January 04, 2008

It is my hope that my sons will grow up with some of the same toys that I did. No, I didn't play with electronic games, my toys didn't use mountains of batteries, and I didn't bankrupt my parents in the process.

The toys that I grew up with were simple.

Blocks were wonderful. I built towers and roads with colourful wooden shaped blocks when I was young. Like all children, I liked knocking the towers over most of all. Of course, I don't remember that myself, but have heard stories from my family told with fondness.

When I got a bit older, I loved Lego. Simple lego blocks could transform my whole room into another world. I built houses, fashioned families and made up stories. I would play long into the night with my Legos, creating fantasy worlds from my imagination.

I was never much of a girly girl, and, and I remember my trucks. Metal tonka trucks that could withstand the play of someone much harsher then I. In fact, these held up so well, I recently found 3 of them and gave them to my son. Trucks were great for playing in the sandbox or just driving through my lego towns.

What girl's life would be complete without her dolls? Dolls are timeless toys, and I loved them. Whether it was the Baby Alive when I was very young, or the Barbies when I was a bit older, those dolls saw me through some fabulous times.

I didn't need fancy, computerized, battery operated toys when I was young. With my imagination and a few staples, I was the happiest kid on the block!
