The scent of roses filled my room as I rocked my new baby to sleep the day after we brought him home from the hospital. Each time I inhaled the delicate aroma, I thought of my husband. After our son was born, he came into the hospital room carrying a gift bag that he placed in my hands. Inside, I was delighted to discover a large rose scented candle (my favorite fragrance) and a small journal that I could use to record my thoughts about our new little boy.

One: Make a thoughtful gift basket using candles, teas, bath and body products, her favorite snacks, or even reading material she enjoys. You can make one for her yourself or you can purchase one already assembled from stores like Bath and Body Works, Yankee Candles, and Target.

Two: A pair of thick, comfy socks and a robe or cozy blanket make excellent gifts to ward off Mom's chills during nighttime feedings.

Three: Make coupons for her to use when she needs help with household tasks. These can include washing the dishes, walking the dog, vacuuming the house, caring for the lawn or garden, cooking a meal, or doing laundry.

Four: Offer to watch the baby for her when Mom feels up to enjoying a night out again.

My son is now four years old, but I have not forgotten the scent of roses lingering in my room as our son slept in my arms. The love that was given with that precious gift nearly four years ago is still meaningful to me today. The new mother in your life will appreciate the personal gift you choose for her as well, and it will remain something she treasures for years to come.
