Alternatives to Ebay

This is a question not easily answered. The truth is that it may depend on your situation. Are you looking to make the thousands of dollars a month that may be promised with those "Guides to Making $1000s on Ebay", or are you just trying to sell some junk to clean out your basement?

If you were looking to start an online retail business about 10 years ago, Ebay may have been your best solution. Nowadays, it is hard to say whether that is still true. Ebay has since raised their auction prices and commission rates. This makes it harder for a new business to start out. On the other hand, where else are you going to find 4 million consumers a month?

The millions of willing spenders do have an appealing edge to it. The problem is figuring out what these spenders are looking to buy, and can you provide it at that price and still make a profit. The competition is very strong on Ebay. The early businesses and the larger companies have gained an amount of leverage, as they are able to play the game better by being able to afford some loss from underbid items.

There are many other options on the net. The best solution is to have a good understanding of as many consumer sites as possible. If you plan to sell on a very regular basis, you should plan to open your own web site. Use Ebay to help build your business's reputation. Keep in contact with customers and help encourage repeat business. This will help justify the prices you pay for the use of Ebay.

Do not forget the other auction sites, as well as other store sites. If you are serious about your online business, hire employees to help monitor products on different sites. You will need help trying to keep up with price changes and new products.

So, long story short, Ebay may be a good tool to help your business. However, exploring other paths may be appropriate to make your business successful. Even though there have been many successful businesses formed from Ebay, the company shows a certain amount of greed that hurts the small and new businesses. With your own online store, you will receive more profit due to fewer expenses. Also, it will benefit not to have dozens of competitors right next to your products. This makes for better success in selling your items.
