There was a time not long ago when pharmaceuticals did not not rule the land. People had to depend on knowledge of plants to heal them of their illnesses. Often people would depend on essential oils to relieve their pains.
An essential oil is a distilled concentrate of a plant or flower. At this strength these materials have medicine like qualities. You can make your own by using a distillation process but to begin you might want to start collecting oils from your local health food store.
There are several methods for using essential oils. To inhale them you can simply put a drop or two on a tissue and breath them in. To affect a whole room you can get a diffuser which is a candle under a tiny basin of water and then you place the oils in the basin and they get steamed into the room. You can also put drops in a candle or on a light bulb. Essential oils are great as massage oils (mixed with a base oil like olive oil) or in the bath these ways allow direct contact with your skin. Some people make other household products such as shampoos, cleaners, astringents and even perfume and colognes. You can also use some oils in the kitchen treating your illness and your palate.
Here are some common essential oils that can play a role in everyones day to day life.
Lavender oil helps you sleep. Peppermint helps keep you alert and is good for headaches. Eucalyptus oil is good for chest colds. Oregano oil is a powerful immune booster. Tea tree and rosemary oils are excellent antiseptics. Geranium and bergamot are good mood elevators. Patchouli or ylang ylang can spice up the bedroom. These are but a few oils and there uses but there are many more widely available. You can also mix them to achieve certain results.
Next time you get a headache or a cold instead of going to the pharmacy try instead the essential oil route and use the wisdom of our ancestors to enhance you life.
NOTE:I suggest getting a good reference book before buying oils that way you know what you need to achieve your desired results. "The Fragrant Pharmacy" by Valerie Ann Worwood is a very thorough publication that even includes information on distilling your own essential oils.
