I had to think long and hard before deciding which side of this argument I would agree with. My initial reaction was to say that it is obviously success that is most important. Promotions, league titles, cup wins, qualification for Europe, or other big continental tournaments, are all things that the fans crave, directors and chairmen demand, and managers pray for.
However, as a Watford fan I am in a decent position to weigh up the pros and cons. We are currently second in the championship, looking to make a quick return to the premier league. We are, therefore, currently successful. We are achieving this success with no style whatever. Anyone who has had the misfortune to watch any of our matches this season will have seen an organized defense, and one tactic, and one tactic only. Hoof it forward quickly and often. This does not make for entertaining viewing.
So as a fan, am I happy? On balance, I would have to say that I am. I hate the way we play, but I love seeing us at the top of the table. Our manager, Adrian Boothroyd, has found a way of playing that achieves success. He is a hero to Watford fans although his tactics have led to them suffering many a boring Saturday afternoon.
Obviously it would be great to be an Arsenal, Barcelona, Real Madrid, or Manchester United fan, whereby you could enjoy success with style, but for a vast majority of football fans that isn't possible.
In order to play with style, you need to have exciting flair players. These players cost too much money for most clubs, and wouldn't entertain the idea of playing anywhere other than at the very top. The teams at the top have the biggest grounds, the biggest crowds, the richest backers, and the best marketing. In order to get into a position like this, you first have to achieve success.
I have finally decided then that my initial reaction was right. We all want success first. If style can come later then that is ideal. If not, I'll just be happy with any success we might be able to achieve. Top of the table being boring, or bottom of the table being entertaining? It's no contest.
