I can still hear my mother saying, "My daughter's toys keep her busy and out of trouble!" What a relief this must have been for my mom. She was able to get her housework done because I was mesmerized for hours. Mom didn't have to worry about how my toys controlled the way I viewed the world. Everything I played with back in the day seemed to be creative and mind expanding in nature. Toys and games of the past were of a simple nature and non-violent.
It is hard to believe something as simple and colorful as crayons could provide hours of safe, fun and creative play. With my crayons and paper in hand my imagination took me on many vibrant journeys. Each house, rainbow and flower I drew always left me with a smile on my face. If I became no longer interested in drawing then the bright primary colors of Play Dough caught my interest. My Play Dough took me on adventure of building an Indian village or creating a jungle with many different animals. It is amazing when you think of it how mind expanding these toys could be.
With the technological toys of today children are molded into what someone else envisions them to be. Rather than letting their imaginations grow and discover on their own. PlayStations and many computer games may instill a self centered attitude among the youth of today. Toys should be used to expand a child's mind and help them explore the world. Instead a lot of the techno-toys of today reinforce personal gain. The child's goal is scoring the most points by building the biggest or having the most. One must remember it is okay to step back into the past and use the toys of yesteryear to balance the effect of the technological games of today.
