ETYMOLOGY:

The name Scott (Pronounced SKOT) is Old English and is a geographical name and originally indicated someone who was a native of Scotland or who spoke Gaelic.



ORIGIN & HISTORY:

It is thought that originally this name was given by the Romans to an Irish tribe. In 423 C.E the Romans withdrew from Britain and this tribe invaded Scotland. In this case the name originally had the meaning Irishmen'.

Scott was used as a first only for many years until eventually becoming used as a last name also. Its usage spread out from this settled group and ultimately became commonly used.



POPULARITY:

A popular name in the US right back in 1900 Scott went through it's sharpest rise of popularity in the 1940s, it reached a high point during the 1960s (possibly due to the character Scotty in the show Star Trek) and has since gradually declined in popularity, however it still holds a strong position in the top thousand names, ranking as the 253rd most popular name for new born baby boys in the United States in 2006.

In England and Wales the name failed to make the top hundred most popular names in 2006, it had ranked in as the 96th most popular name in the previous year.

The name is also popular in Scotland, Ireland and Australia.

The Scott Motorcycle Company, owned by Scott Motors Limited was a company founded by Alfred Angas Scott who made himself and his company famous by his innovative productions.

The HMS Scott is the biggest vessel in the Royal navy's Hydro graphic Squadron and the largest survey vessel in Western Europe.

Scott Weiland (born 27th October 1967 as Scott Richard Kline), an American musician and singer who fronted the rock band The Stone Temple Pilots and now fronts the rock group Velvet Revolver.

Scott Andrew Speed (born 24th January 1983), an American former race car driver.
