Safely lose weight

It is the beginning of a new year, and of course, this is usually the time where many resolve to make changes in their lives, weight being one of them.

It's not an easy task, but with both traditional ways and medical procedures to accomplish such goals, there are some good shortcuts to make a better and healthier you.

But before we discuss other options of weight loss and good health, let's briefly touch on the topic of weight loss surgery.

These procedures involve types of surgery such as duodenal switch, RNY gastric bypass, the gastric sleeve, and the least invasive type, the insertion of the LAP BAND system.

Of all the above surgical interventions, only the LAP BAND system is reversible. There is no cutting (except small incisions to insert the band itself) or stomach stapling; this system basically bands off part of the stomach.

But whatever surgical option one may choose, please remember that is neither a quick answer to weight loss, nor is it a permanent cure or an "easy way out."

It is only a tool that is there to help in the journey of weight reduction; like any other traditional form of weight loss plan, it isn't going to be totally successful without some form of lifestyle change.

Any type of weight loss surgery (WLS) does not happen overnight. There are procedures involved in getting approved, and even then, not everyone does.

Most insurance companies want patients seeking WLS to fall into a certain body mass index (BMI) usually those that are on a dangerously high level (you can have this and not necessarily be confined to the house/bed), along with certain co-morbidies such as diabetes, heart disease, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, etc. that could be health and life threatening.

In addition, the patient needs a documented diet history. Depending on one's insurance carrier, the requirement can range anywhere from six months to five years.

Patients are also required to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to be sure they do have a realistic idea of what they are getting into and they also have realistic weight and lifestyle change goals as well.

A nutritionist will also evaluate the patient on their current eating habits and educate them on what they will need to change post-op. Like any other change, it is not easy. One can't expect to have surgery, only to return home and down a few Big Macs a few days later and then complain that the procedure "didn't work."

LAP BAND patients run the risks of band slippage, having "stuck" moments and "productive burping"
