The majority of home businesses fail due to competition, lack of product or market, or poor financial planning.
If you're unable to make a profit, that is, your home business is creating debt and is unable to provide income, you have no choice but to either refinance, which is unlikely, or close the business.
If you're unable to meet customer demand, or your market is too small, it's likely you will encounter the situation described above. Your choices then are to either diversify or create new products in order to expand your market, or close the business.
If the competition is better financed, has a greater market share, and continues to grow while your market share continues to shrink, as do your profits, it is probably best to close the business.
But not all home businesses close due to failure.
If your home business is growing rapidly, it may outgrow its current business model. As a home business owner, you either need to control the growth and thus limit expansion so as to remain at home, or expand the business. This would most likely mean closing the home business and refitting it to a small business model.
A home business can be temporary. For example, selling on ebay could be a home business for the unemployed person, until he or she again finds employment in her field. This sort of business arrangement can be altered or stopped altogether, according to your schedule.
You may want to close your home business if your family dynamic changes, or income needs change. If your business is profitable, but the income does not meet the new demands of your family, you may need to close the home business and search out other employment.
When operating your home business, you need to continually refer to your business plan. If you find that your goals are not being met, that income is constantly channeled back into the business just to make the bills, it's time to consider closing your home business.
When you find excuses not to do the work your home business requires you to do, it may be time to close it down. The advantage of a home business is that it is an outgrowth of your passion, of your drive and ambition. If the business is not an exciting venture, it's time to close it down.
Running a home business is risky and exciting. It is fun, frustrating, and at times, foolish. But you never would know if the risk was worth it if you didn't try.
