Tents provides a superior camping experience over RVs for the simple reason that tents are much more about authentic camping than an RV. An RV can provide a very enjoyable experience from a recreational standpoint, but staying in a RV is less of an outdoor camping atmosphere than a tent. Here are a few factors that make a tent more of a camping experience than an RV.
Elements
Sleeping in a tent is about communing on some level with nature and the elements. Truthfully, a more rugged camping experience wouldn't even include tents. When you sleep in an RV with a heater and a semi-regular bed, you aren't experiencing all the elements of nature. Some will argue that the RV is what makes camping tolerable, but if you are just hoping to tolerate camping, then perhaps you should pursue more enjoyable recreational activities.
Amenities
A similar factor to braving the elements is the amenities that are often attached to RVs. Television sets, DVD players, video games, Internet access, full kitchens, showers, and appliances are wonderful things. However, they aren't really "camping". If you have access to all of your normal amenities, you have essentially duplicated your home experience. There is nothing wrong with taking advantage of these options, but it is less like camping and more like taking your home on the road.
Dirt
Let's face it. Camping is about living outdoors, engaging nature, and getting dirty. If you stay in an RV, you are less likely to experience the pure joy of feeling grimy and grungy after a few days. This is exactly why some people avoid camping because they are used to their showers and soft beds. Again, there is nothing wrong with that but camping is what it is.
Regardless of whether you are a tent person or an RV person, getting away from home is largely about comfort level. I would argue that camping is more authentic when experienced in a tent, but everyone has to decide for themselves. Since camping is largely regarded as a recreational activity, it is important to find a balance of amenities that will allow individuals to enjoy the experience.
