How to hire a designer for your home business brochures

Hire a student to design your home business brochure. You have ideas on what you want your brochure to look like, so join forces with a student who has desktop publishing skills to develop and produce just the brochure you envision.

At the local schools, there are students in classes on desktop publishing, computer applications, marketing, advertising, etc. who are knowledgeable about computer software and promotion. After all, teachers give these kinds of assignments all the time. Talk to the teacher about whether any of the more experienced students may be ready to take on some freelance work.

Interview three or four students who might already have portfolios displaying their work. Discuss your vision with the potential designers and listen to their ideas. This will be time well-spent because you may get some excellent ideas from these students.

As a teacher,I can think of several students right off the top of my head who would jump at the chance to do this kind of work, add it to their portfolios, and pick up a little spending money. These students could do the entire brochure on the computer and make you a copy on a disk for later revisions and updates.

You might think you need to hire a professional designer, but the fact is: You already know a lot about what you want in your brochure. Here are some things you already know:

1) Your purpose - What you are trying to achieve by producing this brochure?

2) Its Use - Will you use the brochure for mailing, to include in packaging, to hand-out in person?
3) Your product or service's selling points - What makes your product unique or valuable?

4) How customers can get in touch with you- contact persons, address, phone numbers, Fax numbers, emails, etc.
6) Your image - Early on, you probably thought about what overall image you are working to portray by using a logo, color, style, fonts, etc.
7) Your target audience- Which segment of the population are you trying to reach?

See? You already know quite a bit about what information needs to be in your brochure and how you want it displayed. What you need is the artist or technician to use some knowledge and skills to use a software program to design and produce your brochure. You will see a positive return on your efforts and the cost of designing your brochure will be well below what you would pay a professional. You will truly be amazed at what a student can produce!
