It is a brand new year, and this year, I have resolved to just grow.
It seems easy, and it was easy to come upon this reasoning, that when we have a new year, it is like we have been given a new piece of paper upon which to write our life notes onto. Many people resolve to quit drinking, smoking, doing drugs, spending money, etc., but what no one seems to understand is that they can stop all those habits but that those habits needed someplace to come from and where it is that they came from is the same place where they have to start to end - within.
Growth is one of those words that people use when they cannot clearly describe what it is that they want to gain from their lives, or when they do not know what they want from their lives. I know what I want, and what I want is nothing that can be had through anything more than living from the spirit rather than the treadmill, the AA meetings, the shopping sprees. It is not that I feel there are more things in life than partying and having a good time. It is that I feel like we all live too much on the plane where if what I have costs more than what you have, and if I can drink a twelve pack of beer in under an hour, and if I can find the best high in the land without spending a king's ransom on it, this all makes me better than the next guy. How does spending money make a person better than another person? That is such a small way of thinking, almost like there is nothing more important in life than to make sure the guy next to you is not doing everything you are doing, even though we all know that secretly we want the next guy to emulate what we are doing and we want him to think of us as being better than he is. How sick is that? Yikes!
I have resolved to just grow and to keep growing, because with growth comes change. Growth is change, and as long as we have the ability to grow, we have the ability to change, and when we change and we feel our Selves change, we can suddenly see that the road we have traveled needed to be taken so that we could find ourselves where we are right now. A good friend of mine told me that in order to see exactly where we are in life at this moment, and in order to see where it is that we have grown and changed, we have to look back a few years and see where it was the last time we found ourselves in the same mindset, even though we are not in the same predicament as we were at the time we looked back at.
Life changes and evolves and if we are not willing to change and evolve with it, at least in our minds and our souls, we will not change. Life, in short, will continue to suck, because that is the mindset in which we choose to stay.
There are only so many chances in life that we each get to learn. So rather than thinking that you can quit your habits, choose to grow, and then watch as your life evolves around you.
