Thirteen Ways to Entertain Kids on Rainy Day
"Mom, we're bored!"
Every mother has heard this dreaded phrase at some time as the children look out the window at a gloomy day with rain pouring down the panes. Instead of dreading the day, embrace it and think of all the possibilities for fun that are on the horizon.
1) Play weatherman. Dig out the video camera and have the children act like TV weathermen. Have them create weather forecasts for the day (of course rainy) and then create posters for what they hope the weather will be like for the rest of the week. Have them predict temperatures and other weather conditions. Practice their performance and videotape the final performance. It will be fun to see if their predictions come true for the rest of the week. Add costuming to fit the forecast. Wear a galoshes and raincoat for the rainy days or sunglasses for the sunny days. Be creative.
2) Have a tea party. Dress up in the fanciest clothes. Set the table with the good china. Now the kids may not like tea, so choose any other substitute that the kids like from juice to hot chocolate. Have some small sandwiches. These can be made with the children's favorite fillings such as peanut butter and jelly, cheese, or tuna salad. Use cookie cutters to make them into fun shapes with no crusts. Have some small cookies as well. They could be homemade or simply animal crackers. Then put on your most formal manners and enjoy.
3) Go out to the garage. Kids love to tinker in the garage. Give them some small pieces of scrap wood with some nails started in them and let them finish pounding them in. Lift up the hood of the car and show them the parts of the engine. Take out the dip stick and show them how to check the oil. There are so many activities to share in the garage that the kids will forget its raining outside.
4) Make homemade kites. There are plenty of instructions on the Internet, or even kits if you plan in advance for a rainy day, but really there are simply a few inexpensive items that are needed. Two dowel sticks-one 18 inches and the other 24 inches, colorful paper, string, kite string, ribbons and glues. Then by the time there is a sunny day the glue will dry and the kite will be ready to fly.
5)Play paper football. Fold a piece of paper into a small triangular shape that is able to be flicked. If you are new to the rules of paper football, rules are easily found with a quick Internet search.
6)Do science experiments. An easy one
