How to design a brochure for your home business

Your Brochure of your home business makes the first impression about what you offer to your customers. Naturally, it is very important that you take your time to design it, check, edit, re-edit, get it critically reviewed by your confidants before you finally release for printing.

By virtue of being a Home businessman - a Technical Consultant who possesses 3-Lever-files-full of brochures from my suppliers, I have some firm convictions about how a good brochure should be. My ideas may deviate from typical 'Ad Agency' points of view.

1)IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE CREATIVE SKILLS, BETTER GET IT DONE BY SOMEBODY:

You may be an expert in your chosen business line, but creating a brochure is a different cup of tea. If you are quite sure you can do it, go ahead. You must have a good command over your language, your expressions, color-sense, aesthetic sense and creative lay out skills. A good command over MS-Word, Photoshop or other Presentation Softwares would be essential. If you are not sure, give your ideas, state your expectations and get it done by a friend, an acquaintance or if you can afford, by an expert.

2)HAVE A WELL-DESIGNED LOGO FOR YOU:

A logo will add pep to your business identity. The logo should be visually attractive, unique and eye-catching. It would be wonderful if its shape, the monogram and the art-work is able to indicate your line of business. Again, if you can't do it yourself, get external help. Friends with creative bend of mind will be able to help you.

Being an Artist by hobby, I created the Logo my self. My logo contained 2 letters, with some unique twists and bends that could pictorially convey my line of activity - giving solutions to design Problems. When some customer keenly observes the logo, grasps its purport and asks you "Is it what you wanted to convey?", it gives added pleasure.

3)YOUR BROCHURE SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT BLEND OF CONTENTS:

The contents should include

- A Write-up about the range of your products/ services, your past experience, your specialty and your unique strengths. If you can list out your good customers for reference, it would be fine. My strong advice here is to AVOID OVER-STATEMENT and EXAGGERATION OF YOUR CAPABILITIES. A few catchy phrases that attracts the reader are quite in order; the text may subtly convey your self-confidence and capability but should not end up as a self-flattery.

- Pictures, photos and illustrations. (You can source them mostly from Internet).

- Right combination of Colors and shades, selection
