Elvis (EL-vis) masculine - English meaning unknown. It may have come from Alvis or Elwin. ETMYOLOGY Alvis means all wise in Old Norse. From Norse mythology Alvis was the name of a dwarf about to marry Thrud, daughter of Thor. The mighty Thor was against this union and tricked the dwarf by asking him questions all through the night until the rays of the sun hit the dwarf and turned him into stone. The origin of Elvis may have also have been Alvin or Elvin Old English meaning elf friend.
According to the Catholic encyclopedia, St. Elvis (an obscure Celtic Saint) came over from Ireland and baptized St. David, the patron saint of Wales in 454 A.D. On the Pembrokeshire coast of Wales a place called St. Elvis farm still remains. There you can also find a burial chamber marked St. Elvis Cromlech.
The name Elvis has made the top 1000 most popular names list for the last 100 years. The only exception to this is, oddly enough, the decade Elvis Aron Presley was born (1930's). It made its best showing on the list in the 1950's, peaking at 547. This was assuredly attributable to the popularity of Elvis Presley in the 1950's. Alvis was on the top 1000 names list from the 1900's through the 1950's, it reached its most popular level at 663rd in the 1910's.
Elvin was on the top 1000 list for the last 100 years with the exception of 2002. In the early part of the 20th century it made a respectable showing in the 300's but has been on a gradual decline since the 1940's. For the last several years it has been in the upper 900's. Alvin has been a much more popular name. It has been in the top 500 nearly every decade and was in the top 100 from the 1900's through the 1930's.
Of course, the most well known person with the name Elvis;
Elvis Aron Presley, singer/actor (b. January 8, 1935 d. August 16,1977). He is known as the King of rock-n-roll, or just simply, the King. Thirty years after his death his birthday is still celebrated. On the anniversary of his death huge crowds of fans pay their respects at Elvis' Graceland mansion on Elvis Presley Boulevard in Memphis, Tennessee.
