Starting and growing a business is a very satisfying experience for entrepreneurs. It's also an experience where taking a step at a time in assessing our immediate needs pays off. It's very tempting to buy all the equipment we think we're going to need at start-up, but this is not usually advantageous.
Many who start home businesses make the mistake of laying out a large amount of cash for new equipment before getting the business off the ground. Unless you plan to manufacture products, or provide a service that requires equipment it's always better to start slow and build clientele before investing heavily in equipment.
The reason for this is, you don't have a clear idea of the volume of business you will be doing. After doing a break-even analysis and marketing and selling your product, you'll have a better handle on what equipment you'll need to buy.
Still another reason for waiting to buy equipment is that you might change your mind about running a home business. It happens. Of all the businesses that fold, the majority of them fold after the first year because people find that working from home is not what they really want to do.
Networking in business associations is not for Marketing purposes only, networking also provides the best avenue for purchase of equipment.
Another advantage of waiting to buy equipment is that you'll have the opportunity to join trade associations within your industry that can guide you to good equipment investments. They know where to find the best discounts. You might find equipment that will fit your needs from a member who is selling his equipment.
If your business is already established, and you need to invest in equipment, there are several courses of action you can take. Trade associations are still your best resource but wholesale or used equipment are available for most industries. There is some risk in buying used equipment, but you can buy a more durable and better product for less cost.
The Internet is your best source for comparison shopping when buying new or refurbished equipment. Whether you buy new or used, you'll want to get a good fix on what the item costs. It's possible to buy new products for less money than used products in some instances. Use a good search engine to find the best prices.
Also, there is still great value in placing wanted ads. Place them on social networking websites and in the newspaper. Use every resource at your disposal to find the best discounts.
When buying large capital equipment, be sure to have it insured. Loss of a ten thousand dollar piece of equipment can be devastating to your business. Production machinery for example, requires a large expenditure usually in the thousands of dollars price range.
Once you know the volume of business you will be doing, go ahead and invest in the equipment. Network and use the Internet to find the best deals on the equipment you need.
