Is a Universal Healthcare Plan politically feasible? Let's look at all the reasons why it better be:

"No American is denied health care in America." After Tom Delay, former House Majority Leader, made this statement to a group of Brits in the UK, Keith Olbermann of MSNBC's Countdown With Keith Olbermann had to ask, "Ever heard of pre-existing condition?" Not only has he obviously not heard of a pre-existing condition, Mr. Delay must have missed Michael Moore's latest documentary, Sicko. In Sicko, Moore exposes the failures of the American healthcare system.

Despite these failures, the American healthcare system would be great if it wasn't for the 47 million plus Americans who don't have health insurance; the Americans who have health insurance but can't afford the co-pays, deductibles, patient costs, or prescription medications; the Americans who have just been terminated (outsourcing jobs) and are offered Cobra (the wonderful plan that keeps a terminated employee from losing insurance) and are now faced with the outrageous 300 to 400 dollars a month or more for the cost of Cobra (yet, they no longer have an income); and, oh yeah, let's don't forget those American's who have insurance but are denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition.

Yes, the American healthcare system is wonderful-so wonderful that when congress proposed the S-Chip (a bill that would cover 4 million American children who don't have healthcare), President Bush immediately vetoed the bill. Why do Americans need S-Chip when they have such a great healthcare system? As Bush stated, the S-Chip was going to help Americans who make up to 80,000 dollars a year. Why would an American making 80,000 dollars a year need help? Bush was right when he said it's the poor kids who need help.

Let's see, the poor kids (who S-Chip was not focused on) receive Medicare, Mom receives food stamps, daycare is often paid for by the state, free lunches are offered at school, their kids receive pell grants for college, Hudd offers free housing (albeit, the list is often long), the state pays the utilities (depending on income and amount of kids), the earned income credit draws a fat tax return check, and oftentimes, a certain amount of income is received from social security or some other assistance. (Granted, no one wants to be poor, and not all of these services are offered to everyone who needs it.)

Now, consider the person making $80,000 a year. There are no free lunches for the kids (school lunches are now
