When it comes to paid consultants for a home-based business, I believe the majority of them are just not necessary. There are several reasons for this, but there are mainly two. The first is most home-based businesses are limited financially, and money spent on a consultant may be used better elsewhere. The second is most business owners can make these decisions on their own with free advice from mentors and people they trust.
Home businesses also can adapt very quickly. The way you want to portray yourself starting out may change as you gain experience. The only way I would involve a consultant in any area of business is if they were willing to work of a percentage of the extra profits they made me, which gives them more of an incentive and risk as opposed to paying someone regardless of the results. Many consultants will not do that however, because logically they could do the same things for themselves and make more money.
My alternative to hiring an image consultant would be to run your ideas past people who represent who you're trying to reach. This can be done very cheaply and can be combined with other types of marketing. For example, suppose you own a catering business and are trying to decide between several website designs that will impact your image. You can offer a free sample of your food at an expo booth for anyone willing to vote which site they like best. Not only are you getting feedback for your marketing, but you may be developing potential customers in the process.
It's also all right to have people in your life that you get advice from, but it's better to develop those relationships out of respect as opposed to paying someone. I have people who I won't hesitate to help because they're friends, even in a mild competition situation. There's people I know I can go to as well when I feel like my businesses are stuck for some reason. You can find people like that over time, and it's a much better situation.
I hope this advice has been helpful. I don't want to feel like I'm putting down consultants in all business situations (sometimes they really are needed), but I just believe they have a greater chance to drain a home-based business than help.
