us. Back to the supply and demand theory, more demand for a product makes it more valuable.
Many people argue that other professions, such as teachers, are much more valuable and therefore should be the ones receiving the large salaries. We have dealt with the demand part of the supply and demand theory so now let's get to the supply part. The number of people who can perform simple tasks such as a carpenter or plumber is huge. That is why they are not paid as much as lawyers or doctors, of which there are fewer. The number of people who have the skill to perform at a professional level in sport are extremely small. Because there is a huge demand for so few people their value is huge.
The main point is that these athletes are not worth millions of dollars because of their value to the community. They are more than worth those millions to the people who pay their salaries, the people who are making many times that much because of the athletes. If you don't agree with the salaries then the solution is simple; don't buy the event tickets, the merchandise or the television programming packages, all of which put money directly into both the owner's and athlete's pockets. As long as people are willing to continue to pay higher prices for these things, athlete's salaries will only go one way; up.
