There is an old saying: "When in Rome, do as the Romans". Our identity is not very defined, to be sure. But we do expect some efforts to learning the language(s) (one or both official languages) and to 'fit in' as it were. While we stand 'strong and true' in the North, we only stand united when all see the strength in numbers.
To say all that is to say that the difference between all personal cultures, and a Canadian identity can be seen in making good neighbours through 'fitting in'. The curriculum for the schools is set.
While some social exercises try to include diverse cultures, and we have stopped with a Christian prayer in schools in favor of no religion, we can express our individual culture and religion. Many clothing affectations have been added.
Canadian do not stand up and protect until it becomes one too many compromises. Do not ever underestimate the ability of a true Canadian to stand up for their right to be themselves, while fitting in with the whole.
Canadian are peace makers, at home as well as abroad. So when trying them out with the latest affectations, there will always come a point of conflict.
While many Canadian feel we have become the next US state (perhaps this is the immigrant influence?) many recognize their uniqueness and cultural practices as being open to a lot more. We have been asked to get passports to travel along the world's longest border, which has remained undefended lo, these many years. Many Canadians see the problem with this in terms of their communication with friends and family on both sides of this border.
I am sorry to see so many people struggling with this particular subject and would highly recommend you look around at all your blessings, before dismissing and giving away Canadian's heritage of cultural mores.
