Challenges of extra-curricular activities for teens

Often the biggest challenge some students face when deciding on extracurricular activities is making choices that are compatible with the time they have available. They also have to consider what they hope to gain from their choice of activities. There are several benefits that come from taking an interest in activities that go beyond scholastics.

For instance, a student can meet a whole new group of friends by engaging in activities that spark spark interest. It can also be a way to prepare students for what will go on in the real world once they graduate. There are many excellent volunteer, school organizations, or even pay-oriented options that can go a long way toward helping a student determine what path they may choose to follow at the end of the high school and college years.

Taking part in extracurricular activities in high school does not go unnoticed when submitting college application forms. Every single one of them will inquire about what activities you were involved with outside of the high school class room.

It's important for students to keep in mind that "more" extracurricular activities are not necessarily better. This is not what college admission officials look for. Rather, they prefer students who have a balance in their education, regardless if it's in the classroom or as a volunteer or member of the school paper.

They don't want to see a student who tries to do everything. Ultimately what is more important is that the student shows commitment and passion toward the extracurricular activity of choice. To flit from one organization to another without committing yourself wholly to any of them, does not exhibit resolve or consistency by a student.

Sure, it can be challenging to find that one activity that is perfect, but consider all the options.

Extracurricular activities are not limited to school. Keep in mind there are opportunities to incorporate work experience as an activity that help prepare students for the real world. Some may be volunteer and some may pay a little and help earn money toward college.

Then of course there is always community service. Whether it's helping out as a tutor for younger kids, or spending time with seniors or at a local hospital, they are all great activities that will look stand out on a college application and at the same time, be instrumental in building character and helping the student grow as a person.

Regardless of how difficult it may seem to find that special extracurricular niche for yourself, it is well worth the time and effort put into it.
