Writing for Success

How to succeed as a creative writer

The Day Michael Jordan Said No

Rejection has the propensity to be our greatest nemesis. Rejection letters from publishers, critiques stating our artwork is sub-par, notifications that our work didn't win the contest can all cause us to want to throw up our hands and say, "I give up!" I was tempted to give up the day Michael Jordan said no.

I had written my second children's book, "I Can't Play Basketball, I'm Only Four Feet Tall". My intention was to self-publish, as I had done with my first book. Since the book dealt with the dreams of a little boy who wanted to be a ball player, I decided to send copies to basketball stars and solicit endorsements. In my mind, a self-published book with endorsements from NBA players equaled SALES. I sent the book to several players, including Michael Jordan. This was a bold step for me, because I am the type of person who would not normally take that kind of chance for the fear of being rejected.

Within two weeks, I received a large envelope in my post office box. The address was that of Mr. Jordan's company, Jump-Inc. As I walked outside, I began to open the envelope with hope and trepidation. In the envelope were the copy of the book I had sent and a letter. I was stopped in my tracks as I began to read.

"Dear Ms. Gilliam:

This acknowledges receipt of your correspondence. Thank you for your inquiry.

We regret that we are unable to give you a favorable response regarding Michael's endorsement of your book. Please know that he appreciates your presenting him with the opportunity."

The letter continued with well wishes and was signed by his administrative assistant.

I got that unwelcome feeling in the pit of my stomach; you know the one that feels like a sucker punch. My heart sank, as my eyes welled up with tears. However, before I had gotten the chance to fully begin my personal pity party and entertain thoughts of giving up on my dreams and finding a nine to five, the voice of God stopped me in my tracks.

"Do you realize what just happened?"

'Yes,' I responded. 'I got rejected by Michael Jordan'.

"No. You got a response from Michael Jordan. He responded to you."

I was stunned. I hadn't even thought about it that way. Michael Jordan responded to me. A man of his stature took the time to acknowledge me. Out of all the players that I had sent books and requests to, he was the only one who had taken the time to write me back.

Instantly, all thoughts of self-pity and giving up were replaced
