To me, the question is absolutely redundant. If you need someone else to come in and help you with your own business, that is, your own entrepreneurship, then may I suggest, you probably don't have much a chance of making this thing work. That is ninety nine percent of the reason why we start our own businesses. Because we are either fed up with other peoples "ideas," or because we have one or more great ideas of our own. It would have been a little like the Kentucky fried chicken man advertising for a recipe? It makes about as much sense as that!
Now I am going to offend the "consulting" crowd of our world. I think the whole thing is as much a hoax as palm reading. The reason is simple. Usually, when someone sets out to open a business, or they begin faltering in their business, the answer is right in front of them, they just need someone to pry it out. If you're an isolationist and have no one to confide in, then go for it, pay someone to do what any good friend with half a brain could do. Most of the time, unwarranted worry is our problem.
We are in the lawn and garden equipment sales and repair business. Every year, around late fall, things get tight. You have to keep up with advertising, and you have to continue paying all the bills, but the influx of money just naturally slows in the off season. Since we started, in fact after twenty years, I begin to worry come fall. My wife will say what she has been saying for nearly as many years; "you go through this every year, quit worrying about it." Well that does not help, so I usually blow it, and spend a bunch of money on new equipment and a new advertising campaign and then sit on it until the next year. A small business persons best consultant is him or herself in a quiet room, thinking about what they have accomplished, what has worked and what has failed. It is then, when we begin to be an entrepreneur and have the necessary new ideas pop into our head. If you don't take that time, you WILL drown in unwarranted worry. You will become your businesses own demiseyes, your worst enemy.
Just as someone who knows nothing about you, your past, your achievements, your failures, will cause you great pains if you listen to them. I have tried it, and every time, they come up with the same old worn out ideas that our business went through and proved failures long ago. Fortunately I have had enough sense to recognize this and did not fall for repeating the age old failures.
You are an entrepreneur, so BE ONE! The very word is the very meaning of one of the greatest challenges we can inflict upon ourselves. Why would we want to let someone else come along and inflict themselves and "their" ideas on us? If you are going to fail, would you not want to be sure you did everything "you" could have done? Likewise, would you not want to know, you did it yourself when you succeed? Ironically, most consultants are entrepreneurs themselves. If you hire them, ask them who they consulted with. If they did not, which is almost always the case, then I submit, they just proved their own idea to be unnecessary. It is kind of like the profession of psychiatry, all they do is force you to recognize your own problem. Which amounts to what I just said. Alone time with your own thoughts and your own fresh ideas. Calling on someone else, and you are not a true entrepreneur, you are just another employee, only this time, you hired your boss, and he/she will probably get you fired from your own business.
