My opinion actually falls outside the typical yes/no answer. The TERM feminism is outdated, in my opinion, while the concept itself is not.
That said, the concept is completely lost on the generation that followed those who fought so valiently to make this a world where women were just people-just plain folks-like the rest of 'em.
I joined my high school newspaper in 1977 as the sports editor. I won second place in the state for sportswriting, and I came from a school heavy on wrestling. I never wrote about either field hockey or volleyball, simply because it didn't interest me much.
My class traveled to NYC, to Columbia University, to compete in national championships. I entered the sportswriting contest which involved writing an article on the spot. I listed my name as Remesch, Kim. I figured I had a better shot at my work being taken seriously if the judges thought I was a Korean male than a female. I won, and I can only guess if it really played a role. The point is, I felt I had to do it. My daughter would never think about such a thing.
When I went to college, I joined the paper. I had been the editor at mine, and in addition to the writing, my page editing took national awards. The college sports staff was seven guys and me. Many had never written a thing. Still, these newbies were offered the key, money-making male sports. The editor said very matter of factly to me that he assumed I covered girls field hockey. I iterated that I came from a state champion wrestling school, so as editor, that's the main thing I covered. I went home metaphorically feeling for the other head I thought I must have had by the way he looked at me. They had no idea what to do with me.
As it turns out, a major uproar broke out on the field hockey team, with controvery o'plenty, so my place was cemented.
At this time ESPN was putting its first woman on the air-Gail Gardner. Loved her. She made me know it could be done, but I still found myself wondering about locker room access and the like. All questions my male counterparts would never have to think about.
I married right out of high school, and that brought its own set of oddities to me that fell squarely into the feminist crosshairs. I noticed my gas and electric bill was listed only in my husband's name. I was adament about establishing credit as early as age 20. I called the gas and electric company to ask them to add me. I thought it would be the matter of a simple phone call.
