Great first date ice breakers

The First Date with someone is bound to be a nerve-wracking experience. Success of a first date depends on being as relaxed as possible, in a polite and healthy way. (Drinking too much on a first date will result in disaster, so rely on other techniques to make a first date result in a second.) The first-date atmosphere should be conducive to getting to know someone, and should inspire conversation. A movie is a standard date activity; however, for a successful date, a movie should be followed by coffee, or dinner to allow for conversation.

Great first-date locations are safe, public, and allow for relaxed interaction. Meeting for lunch or coffee makes for good first dates because the date will have a definitive length. Coffee or lunch will most likely not last more than an hour or two. Having a specified length of time set for the date will help both parties relax.

Public places are appropriate for first dates, especially with someone that you do not know well. A bookstore, coffee shop or restaurant offers much to observe, and potentially spark conversation. They are also places for help, if necessary.

For someone you already know, but have not dated, a mutually enjoyed activity is a great first date. Playing golf, attending a concert or play (preceded or followed by dinner), a hike, or a day-trip are good first date options.

To "break the ice" while on a first date, first relax and be yourself. The first date is a chance to allow someone to get to know you, and you them. While some dating advice sources will tell you to learn as much as possible about your date before meeting the person, it is much more genuine to discover their likes, dislikes and personality quirks from your date, rather than from another source.

Greeting on your first date can be awkward. If you do not know the person at all, a simple handshake and nice to meet you will suffice. Depending on your social circle, an almost-hug or "air kiss" on the cheek may be appropriate.

To get to know someone, ask a conversation starting question and follow the flow. What is your favorite book or movie is a good one, because it will lead to further conversation. Ask about favorite vacation destinations, or how they would spend a perfect Saturday.

Whether you know the person, or are meeting them for the first time, a "date" can put a lot of pressure on both parties. Staying relaxed, being yourself and choosing an appropriate location will all help make the first date a success.
